The Norwood Scale: Understanding Your Hair Loss Stage

Where do you fall on the Norwood Scale? Understanding your stage helps determine the right treatment.

What Is the Norwood Scale?

The Norwood Scale (also called the Hamilton-Norwood Scale) is the standard classification system for male pattern baldness. It categorises hair loss into 7 stages, from minimal recession to extensive baldness. Understanding your Norwood stage is important because it helps determine: • How many grafts you'll need • Which technique is best for your situation • Whether you're a good candidate for a transplant • What your realistic expectations should be • How much your procedure will cost

Norwood Stages Explained

Norwood 1: No significant hair loss. Minimal recession at the temples. No treatment needed. Norwood 2: Slight recession at the temples, creating an 'M' shape. This is often considered a mature hairline rather than hair loss. Treatment is optional — some men choose to address it early. Norwood 3: Significant recession at the temples. The 'M' shape is more pronounced. This is the earliest stage where most men consider a transplant. Typically requires 1,500-2,500 grafts. Norwood 3 Vertex: Temple recession plus thinning at the crown (vertex). May require 2,000-3,500 grafts to address both areas. Norwood 4: Significant recession and crown thinning. A band of hair still connects the front and crown. Typically requires 3,000-4,000 grafts. Norwood 5: The band between front and crown is thinning. More extensive coverage needed. Typically requires 3,500-5,000 grafts, possibly in two sessions. Norwood 6: Front and crown baldness have merged. Only a horseshoe pattern of hair remains on the sides and back. Requires 4,000-6,000+ grafts, usually in two sessions. Norwood 7: The most extensive hair loss. Only a narrow band of hair remains. May require 5,000-7,000+ grafts across multiple sessions. Donor area may be limited.

Graft Requirements by Stage

These are general estimates — your surgeon will provide a personalised assessment: Norwood 2: 800-1,500 grafts ($2,000-$3,500 CAD in Turkey) Norwood 3: 1,500-2,500 grafts ($2,500-$4,500 CAD) Norwood 3V: 2,000-3,500 grafts ($2,500-$5,000 CAD) Norwood 4: 3,000-4,000 grafts ($3,000-$5,500 CAD) Norwood 5: 3,500-5,000 grafts ($3,500-$6,500 CAD) Norwood 6: 4,000-6,000+ grafts ($4,000-$7,500 CAD, may need 2 sessions) Norwood 7: 5,000-7,000+ grafts ($5,000-$8,000+ CAD, usually 2+ sessions) Important: These are estimates for the transplanted area only. Your surgeon will also consider your donor area capacity, hair characteristics, and long-term hair loss progression.

When to Get a Transplant

The ideal time for a hair transplant depends on several factors: Age: Most surgeons recommend waiting until at least 25-30, when hair loss patterns have stabilised. Getting a transplant too young risks needing additional procedures as hair loss progresses. Stability: Your hair loss should be relatively stable (not rapidly progressing) before a transplant. If you're losing hair quickly, medication (finasteride) may be recommended first. Expectations: A transplant redistributes existing hair — it doesn't create new hair. Patients with limited donor hair and extensive baldness need realistic expectations. Best candidates: Norwood 3-5 patients aged 28-55 with stable hair loss and good donor area density. These patients typically achieve the most dramatic, satisfying results.
