Hair Transplant Scarring: FUE vs FUT and What to Expect

Modern techniques leave minimal scarring — here's what you need to know.

FUE Scarring

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) leaves tiny, circular scars in the donor area — each one approximately 0.7-1.0mm in diameter. These are essentially invisible to the naked eye at hair lengths of 3mm or more. What FUE scars look like: - Tiny white dots scattered across the donor area - Invisible at normal hair lengths (grade 2 or longer) - Only visible if you shave your head to a grade 0-1 - Fade significantly over 6-12 months FUE is the standard technique used in Turkey, and one of its biggest advantages is minimal scarring.

FUT Scarring

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), also known as the 'strip method,' leaves a linear scar across the back of the head. This scar is typically: - 15-25cm long - 1-3mm wide (with good closure technique) - Visible if you wear your hair shorter than grade 3-4 - Permanent, though it fades over time FUT is rarely performed in Turkey — almost all clinics use FUE or DHI. If a clinic recommends FUT, ask why and consider getting a second opinion. Note: FUT can yield slightly more grafts in a single session, which is why some surgeons still use it for very large sessions. However, for most patients, FUE provides sufficient grafts without the linear scar.

Minimising Scarring

To minimise scarring from your FUE procedure: - Choose an experienced surgeon (extraction technique affects scar size) - Follow aftercare instructions carefully - Avoid sun exposure on the donor area for 3 months - Don't pick at scabs - Stay hydrated and maintain good nutrition - Consider PRP treatment to accelerate healing Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how minimal FUE scarring is. Within 3-6 months, the donor area looks completely normal at any reasonable hair length.

Scar Repair

If you have scarring from a previous FUT procedure, Turkish clinics can help: - FUE grafts can be implanted into FUT scars to camouflage them - Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) can disguise scars - Tricopigmentation offers a temporary camouflage option Scar repair is a common procedure in Turkey, and many clinics have extensive experience with it.
