Istanbul: The Hair Transplant Capital of the World

Home to over 500 hair transplant clinics, Istanbul is where the majority of medical tourists go. Here's your complete guide to the city.

Why Istanbul?

Istanbul is the undisputed global capital of hair transplants. The city performs an estimated 5,000+ hair transplant procedures every single day, attracting patients from over 70 countries. For Canadian patients, Istanbul offers:

  • The highest concentration of experienced hair transplant surgeons in the world
  • State-of-the-art facilities that rival any in North America
  • Prices 60-80% lower than Canadian clinics
  • Direct flights from Toronto and Montreal via Turkish Airlines
  • A vibrant, fascinating city to explore during recovery
  • Excellent hotels and restaurants at very affordable prices

Getting Around Istanbul

From the Airport: Istanbul Airport (IST) is the main international airport. Most clinic packages include airport pickup. If not, taxis cost approximately $40-60 CAD to central Istanbul, or you can take the Havaist bus for about $5 CAD.

Public Transport: Istanbul has an excellent metro, tram, and bus system. Get an Istanbulkart (transit card) for about $3 CAD — it works on all public transport and costs a fraction of taxi fares.

Taxis: Affordable by Canadian standards. A 20-minute ride costs about $5-10 CAD. Use BiTaksi app (Turkey's Uber equivalent) to avoid being overcharged.

Clinic Districts: Most hair transplant clinics are concentrated in Sisli, Nisantasi, Levent, and Maslak on the European side, and Kadikoy and Atasehir on the Asian side.

Things to Do During Recovery

By day 3-4 after your procedure, you'll likely feel well enough for light sightseeing. Istanbul offers incredible experiences that don't require physical exertion:

Bosphorus Cruise

A relaxing boat trip between Europe and Asia. Stunning views, minimal walking.

2-3 hours

Grand Bazaar

One of the world's oldest and largest covered markets. Take it slow and enjoy the atmosphere.

1-2 hours

Hagia Sophia

An architectural marvel and UNESCO World Heritage site. Mostly indoor, air-conditioned.

1-2 hours

Spice Bazaar

Smaller and less overwhelming than the Grand Bazaar. Amazing aromas and flavours.

1 hour

Turkish Hammam

Wait at least 2 weeks post-procedure, but a traditional Turkish bath is a must-do experience.

1-2 hours

Istiklal Avenue

Istanbul's famous pedestrian street. Cafes, shops, and people-watching. Take the historic tram.

1-3 hours
