Diet & Nutrition for Hair Transplant Recovery: What to Eat
The right nutrition can boost graft survival and accelerate your recovery. Here's what to eat before and after.
Why Nutrition Matters
Your body needs specific nutrients to heal from surgery and grow new hair. The transplanted follicles are essentially tiny wounds that need to heal, and the new hair growth requires a steady supply of vitamins, minerals, and protein.
Studies show that nutritional deficiencies can reduce graft survival rates by up to 15%. Conversely, optimal nutrition can accelerate the growth timeline and improve the quality of your new hair.
This guide covers what to eat before, during, and after your transplant trip to Turkey.
Before Your Transplant (2-4 Weeks)
Start optimising your nutrition at least 2 weeks before your procedure:
Protein: Increase your protein intake to 1.2-1.5g per kg of body weight. Hair is made of keratin (a protein), and your body needs extra protein for healing. Good sources: chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yoghurt, lentils.
Iron: Ensure adequate iron levels. Iron deficiency is one of the most common causes of poor hair growth. Good sources: red meat, spinach, lentils, fortified cereals.
Vitamin C: Essential for collagen production and wound healing. Good sources: citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli.
Zinc: Critical for cell division and hair follicle health. Good sources: oysters, beef, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas.
Biotin: Start a biotin supplement (5,000-10,000 mcg daily) if you're not already taking one.
Avoid: Alcohol (thins blood), excessive caffeine, and blood-thinning supplements like fish oil and vitamin E for 1 week before surgery.
During Your Trip to Turkey
Turkish cuisine is actually excellent for hair transplant recovery! Here's what to enjoy:
Breakfast: Turkish breakfast (kahvalti) is perfect — eggs, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, and bread. Rich in protein and vitamins.
Lunch/Dinner: Grilled meats (kebabs), fish, lentil soup (mercimek corbasi), and fresh salads. Turkish food is naturally rich in the nutrients you need.
Snacks: Fresh fruits, nuts (especially walnuts and almonds), and Turkish yoghurt.
Hydration: Drink at least 2-3 litres of water daily. Turkish tea is fine in moderation. Avoid alcohol for at least 5 days after surgery.
Avoid: Spicy foods for 3-4 days after surgery (can increase swelling), alcohol, and excessive salt.
After Returning to Canada (Months 1-6)
Continue supporting your hair growth with these dietary priorities:
Protein-rich foods: Continue higher protein intake for at least 3 months.
Omega-3 fatty acids: Resume fish oil supplements after 2 weeks. Eat fatty fish (salmon, mackerel) 2-3 times per week.
Vitamin D: Especially important for Canadians, particularly in winter. Supplement with 2,000-4,000 IU daily.
Green leafy vegetables: Spinach, kale, and broccoli provide iron, vitamin C, and folate.
Nuts and seeds: Walnuts, almonds, and pumpkin seeds are excellent for hair health.
Water: Stay well-hydrated. Aim for 2+ litres daily.
Consider a hair-specific multivitamin that includes biotin, zinc, iron, and vitamin D.
