Your Guide to Hair Transplant Travel from Canada to Turkey

Flight options, visa requirements, and travel tips for Canadian hair transplant patients.

Flight Options from Canada to Turkey

Booking your flight is one of the first major steps in your hair transplant journey. Fortunately, there are several convenient options for travelling from Canada to Turkey. View from airplane window over the Turkish coastline

Direct Flights to Istanbul

For the most straightforward journey, Turkish Airlines offers direct flights to the new Istanbul Airport (IST) from two major Canadian cities:

  • Toronto (YYZ) to Istanbul (IST): Turkish Airlines operates daily direct flights, making this a very popular route. The flight duration is approximately 10 to 11 hours. Round-trip fares typically range from $900 to $1,600 CAD, depending on the season and how far in advance you book.
  • Montreal (YUL) to Istanbul (IST): Travellers from Eastern Canada can take advantage of direct flights from Montreal, which run several times a week. The flight is about 10 hours long, with similar pricing to the Toronto route.

Connecting Flights

If you live outside of Toronto or Montreal, you will need to book a connecting flight. Major Canadian cities like Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa have frequent one-stop flights to Istanbul. These routes usually connect through a major European hub such as Amsterdam (KLM), Paris (Air France), or Frankfurt (Lufthansa), or through Toronto or Montreal for a connection to Turkish Airlines. Total travel time with one stop usually ranges from 14 to 18 hours.

Turkish e-Visa Requirements for Canadians

Canadian citizens require an e-Visa to enter Turkey for tourism, which includes medical travel for a hair transplant. The process is quick, simple, and entirely online.

How to Apply for Your e-Visa

  1. Visit the Official Website: The only place to apply is the official Republic of Turkey e-Visa Application System at evisa.gov.tr. Be cautious of third-party websites that charge extra fees.
  2. Provide Your Information: Select "Canada" as your travel document country and fill in your personal and passport details exactly as they appear on your passport.
  3. Pay the Fee: The fee for Canadian citizens is approximately $70 CAD (this can fluctuate slightly). Payment is made securely online with a credit card.
  4. Download Your e-Visa: After payment, you will receive an email with a link to download your e-Visa as a PDF. You should receive it almost instantly.

It is crucial to print a copy of your e-Visa and keep it with your passport during your travels. While it is an electronic visa, some airlines may ask for a physical copy at check-in, and it's wise to have it on hand for immigration in Turkey. The e-Visa allows for a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Also, ensure your Canadian passport is valid for at least six months from the date you intend to enter Turkey.

Navigating Airport Transfers in Turkey

Nearly all reputable hair transplant clinics in Turkey include VIP airport transfers as part of their packages. This service is designed to make your arrival as smooth and stress-free as possible.

What to Expect on Arrival

Upon clearing customs and collecting your luggage at Istanbul Airport (IST), you will proceed to the arrivals hall. Here, a representative from your clinic will be waiting for you, holding a sign with your name or the clinic's logo. From there, they will escort you to a private, comfortable vehicle for the drive to your hotel. The drive from IST to the city center, where most clinics and hotels are located, typically takes between 45 to 75 minutes, heavily depending on Istanbul's notoriously dense traffic.

If your package does not include transfers, or if you are travelling to a city like Antalya, taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available. A taxi from IST to the European side of Istanbul will cost around $40 to $60 CAD. For more information on costs, find out more.

Essential Travel Tips for Your Trip

A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a smooth trip. Here are some key things to know before you land in Turkey.

Currency and Payments

The local currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and modern shops, it is always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases like water, snacks, or tips. You can withdraw Lira from ATMs, which are abundant throughout the city, or exchange a small amount of Canadian dollars at the airport upon arrival. As of early 2026, the exchange rate is approximately 1 CAD to 25-30 TRY, but this can change.

Language and Communication

The official language is Turkish. However, English is widely spoken in the tourism industry and at all major hair clinics. Your clinic coordinator, medical team, and hotel staff will almost certainly speak fluent English, so communication barriers are rarely an issue for medical tourists. Learning a few basic Turkish phrases like "Merhaba" (Hello) and "Teşekkür ederim" (Thank you) is always appreciated by locals.

Safety and General Advice

Turkey, and especially Istanbul, is a very safe destination for tourists. The areas where clinics and hotels are located are modern, well-policed, and accustomed to international visitors. Use the same common sense you would in any major city worldwide: be aware of your surroundings, keep your valuables secure, and use reputable transportation.
