Planning a Hair Transplant Trip to Turkey
Everything you need to know about flying from Canada, finding accommodation, navigating Turkey, and recovering after your procedure.

Getting There: Flights from Canada
Turkey is well-connected to Canada with both direct and connecting flights. Here's what you need to know:
Direct Flights
Turkish Airlines operates direct flights from Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL), and Vancouver (YVR) to Istanbul Airport (IST). Flight time is approximately 9 hours 50 minutes from Toronto, approximately 9 hours 30 minutes from Montreal, and approximately 11 hours 45 minutes from Vancouver. Turkish Airlines return fares typically range from $900-$1,600 CAD, depending on the season and how far in advance you book.
Air Transat offers year round direct flights from Toronto to Istanbul, operating twice weekly with return fares starting from about $1,100 CAD. Voted the World's Best Leisure Airline by Skytrax, this is a great option for people who live in Southern Ontario.
Connecting Flights
From Calgary (YYC), Edmonton (YEG), Winnipeg (YWG), Ottawa (YOW), and other Canadian cities, you'll likely connect through a European hub. Air Canada is a popular choice for Canadians — while it doesn't fly direct to Istanbul, it offers convenient connections through Frankfurt and London Heathrow, with onward flights to Istanbul operated by partner airlines like Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. In early 2026, Air Canada also signed an interline agreement with Pegasus Airlines, making it even easier to book through-tickets to Istanbul. Other strong options include Lufthansa (via Frankfurt), British Airways (via London), Air France (via Paris), and KLM (via Amsterdam). Connecting fares are often very competitive, ranging from $800-$1,500 CAD return.
Best Time to Book
Book 6 to 8 weeks in advance for the best prices. Avoid Turkish public holidays and the peak summer months (July-August) when prices spike. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer the best combination of pleasant weather and reasonable airfares.
Visa Requirements
Great news for Canadians: As of January 2024, Canadian passport holders no longer need a visa or eVisa to enter Turkey for stays up to 90 days. Previously, Canadians had to purchase an eVisa for approximately $70 CAD, but this requirement has been completely waived. Simply arrive with a valid Canadian passport and you're good to go — one less thing to worry about when planning your hair transplant trip.
Pro Tip for Canadians:
Many clinics include airport pickup in their package. Confirm this before booking — it saves you the hassle of navigating a new city right after a long flight.

Where to Stay
Most hair transplant packages include 3 nights of hotel accommodation. However, we recommend staying an extra night or two for recovery. Here's what to expect:
Included Hotels
Clinics typically partner with 4-star and 5-star hotels near their facility. These are usually modern, comfortable hotels with English-speaking staff. Expect amenities like room service, WiFi, and comfortable beds — essential for your recovery.
Best Neighbourhoods for Hair Transplant Tourists
Nearly all of Istanbul's top hair transplant clinics are located on the European side of the city. Here are the neighbourhoods most popular with hair restoration tourists from Canada — all are considered safe, well-connected, and accustomed to international visitors:
Taksim & Beyoğlu — The heart of Istanbul's medical tourism scene. Taksim is home to Acıbadem Taksim Hospital and dozens of hair transplant clinics, many within walking distance of the main hotels. The famous İstiklal Avenue — a vibrant pedestrian street — is packed with restaurants, cafés, shops, and nightlife. Hotels in this area are well-accustomed to hosting medical tourists, and you'll find everything you need within a short walk. It's safe, central, and lively without being overwhelming during recovery.

Şişli — A modern, professional district just north of Taksim (about 10 minutes by taxi). Şişli is home to major hospitals including Memorial Şişli and Florence Nightingale Hospital, as well as many hair transplant clinics. The neighbourhood is quieter and more residential than Taksim, making it ideal for restful recovery. You'll find excellent restaurants, cafés, and one of Europe's largest shopping malls (Cevahir Mall). It's a safe, clean area with a professional atmosphere.

Nişantaşı — Istanbul's most upscale district, adjacent to Şişli. Known for its tree-lined avenues, designer boutiques, and elegant cafés, Nişantaşı is home to several high-end aesthetic and hair transplant clinics. It's slightly pricier than Taksim or Şişli, but offers exceptional comfort, privacy, and a refined dining scene. If you want a boutique recovery experience in a sophisticated setting, this is the neighbourhood to choose.

Beşiktaş — A scenic waterfront neighbourhood along the Bosphorus, about 10 to 15 minutes from Taksim by car. Beşiktaş offers sea views, fresh air, and an authentic local atmosphere with excellent fish restaurants, lively cafés, and a famous street market. Many patients appreciate the calming waterfront setting during their recovery days. It's a safe, vibrant neighbourhood that gives you a taste of everyday Istanbul life beyond the tourist areas.

Extending Your Stay
If you want to extend beyond what's included, Istanbul offers excellent value. A quality 4-star hotel in Taksim, Şişli, or Nişantaşı costs $80-$150 CAD per night. For luxury options near the Bosphorus in Beşiktaş, expect $200-$400 CAD.
Recovery-Friendly Hotels
Look for hotels with: room service (you won't feel like going out the first day), soft pillows (you'll need to sleep elevated), and ideally a bathtub (for gentle washing after day 3).

Typical Trip Timeline
✈️ Arrival & Consultation
Arrive in Istanbul, get picked up by the clinic's driver, check into your hotel. In the afternoon or evening, you'll have your initial consultation where the doctor examines your scalp, discusses your goals, and designs your new hairline.
🏥 Procedure Day
The big day. You'll be at the clinic for 6 to 8 hours, though the actual procedure is painless thanks to local anaesthesia. Most patients watch Netflix or listen to podcasts during the procedure. You'll leave with a bandaged head and detailed aftercare instructions.
🩺 First Wash & Check-Up
Return to the clinic for your first hair wash (they'll show you exactly how to do it) and a check-up. The doctor will examine the transplanted area and answer any questions. You'll receive your aftercare kit and medications.
🕌 Recovery & Optional Sightseeing
By day 4, most patients feel well enough for light sightseeing. Visit the Grand Bazaar, take a Bosphorus cruise, or simply relax at your hotel. Avoid direct sunlight on your head and any strenuous activity.
🏠 Fly Home
Most hair transplant patients fly home on day 4 or 5. Wear a loose hat at the airport (your clinic will provide one). The flight home is comfortable — just avoid overhead bin wrestling and stay hydrated.

What to Pack

Money & Currency Tips
Turkey uses the Turkish Lira (TRY). As of 2026, 1 CAD is approximately 28-32 TRY. Here are some tips:
Payment Options
Payment for your hair transplant procedure is typically made on the day of the operation, at the clinic. Most reputable clinics accept multiple payment methods:
- Cash: Many clinics prefer cash and some offer a small discount (around 3-5%) for cash payments. The most commonly accepted currencies are US Dollars (USD) and Euros (EUR). Canadian Dollars (CAD) are less commonly accepted in cash. Consequently, if you plan to pay cash, it's usually best to bring USD or EUR (which you can purchase at your Canadian bank before departure).
- Credit / debit cards: Most established clinics accept Visa and Mastercard. Some larger clinics also accept American Express. Be aware that many clinics charge a processing surcharge of 3-10% for credit card payments, so ask about this in advance. Before you travel, call your Canadian bank to let them know you'll be making a large purchase in Turkey — otherwise your card may be declined for fraud protection.
- Wire / bank transfer: Some clinics accept advance payment by international bank transfer. This can sometimes help you lock in a favourable exchange rate, but it does mean paying before you arrive. Only use this option with clinics you've thoroughly vetted.
Tip for Canadians:
Your Canadian bank will typically charge a 2.5% foreign transaction fee on credit card purchases abroad. To avoid this, consider a card with no foreign transaction fees such as Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite, Scotiabank Gold AMEX, Scotiabank Platinum AMEX, Home Trust Preferred Visa, Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard, or Brim Mastercard. Even with the fee, paying by card gives you an extra layer of consumer protection.
Everyday Spending in Turkey
- ATMs: Widely available. Use bank ATMs (Garanti, İşbank, Akbank) rather than standalone machines to avoid high fees. Withdraw Turkish Lira for daily expenses.
- Credit cards: Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at restaurants, shops, and hotels throughout Istanbul.
- Tipping: Not mandatory but appreciated. 10% at restaurants, small tips for hotel staff.
- Budget: Beyond your clinic package, budget $50-$100 CAD per day for food, transport, and incidentals.
